VA Interview Questions Employers Should Ask Before Hiring

By VA Workers PH Team · Published September 22, 2026

A short, well-structured interview is the best predictor you have of whether a VA will actually work out. Here's what to ask — and what the answers should tell you.

Questions About Communication Style

Ask: "How do you prefer to flag a problem you can't solve on your own?" and "Tell me about a time a client's instructions were unclear — what did you do?" Strong answers describe proactively asking clarifying questions rather than guessing or going silent. This single trait — comfort with asking questions rather than staying quiet when unsure — is one of the strongest predictors of a good working relationship.

Questions That Reveal Real Experience

Rather than "Are you experienced with Shopify?", ask "Walk me through how you'd handle a customer refund request in Shopify." Specific, scenario-based questions are much harder to bluff than yes/no skill checklists, and quickly separate genuine hands-on experience from résumé keyword-matching.

Questions About Availability and Overlap

Confirm their actual available hours against your timezone, not just "Philippine Time" in the abstract — a VA available 9am-6pm PHT overlaps very differently with US Eastern than US Pacific. Ask directly whether they've sustained that schedule with a previous client, since availability on paper and availability in practice aren't always the same thing.

Questions About How They Handle Ambiguity

Ask them to describe a task they were given with incomplete instructions, and what they did next. You're listening for initiative (did they make a reasonable judgment call and flag it, or wait indefinitely for more detail) — this matters more for VA roles than almost any technical skill, since remote asynchronous work constantly involves gaps in information.

A Short Practical Test Beats a Long Interview

A brief, clearly-scoped paid test task — 30-60 minutes of real (or realistic sample) work — tells you more than an hour of conversation. Keep it short and compensated; long unpaid "tests" are a red flag candidates increasingly screen employers for, too.
