About the role
Hiring UI/UX Designer
We are looking for an experienced Web Designer with strong Figma and WordPress experience to work on a new responsive website project.
The successful designer will create a detailed, production-ready Figma design system that can be handed directly to a development team for implementation. The website will be assembled from reusable components, so strong attention to structure, accessibility, responsiveness and component states is essential.
Requirements
1. Strong Figma skills, including components with variants, Auto Layout, shared styles and variables. We build directly from the Figma file, so another person must be able to easily understand, navigate and work from it.
2. Provide examples of Figma files that we can open and navigate to assess how you structure components, layouts and design systems.
3. Provide examples of live websites you have designed so we can see the finished result.
4. Experience designing for WordPress. The website will be built in WordPress, and staff will assemble pages using components after handover. Designs therefore need to work effectively within a component-based WordPress environment.
Design & Content
5. Able to design pages that look finished and intentional even when photography or final copy is unavailable. Some content may still be missing when the site launches.
6. Able to work with an existing brand identity, logo system, colour palette and photography direction rather than introducing unrelated visual styles.
7. Able to create a cohesive visual system that remains consistent across different page types, content lengths and layouts.
Accessibility
8. Designs to WCAG 2.2 AA, including:
Minimum 4.5:1 contrast for normal text
Minimum 3:1 contrast for large text and icons
Clearly visible focus states
Minimum 44px tap targets
No meaning conveyed through colour alone
9. Able to design a high-contrast theme and three visitor-controlled text sizes, with every component properly covered in each variation.
10. Willing to revise designs that fail an accessibility check or create unnecessary usability or performance issues.
Performance & Responsive Design
11. Designs for slow internet connections and older mobile devices. Pages should be lightweight, with restrained imagery, no hero video by default and minimal motion.
12. Designs mobile-first, then adapts layouts for tablet and desktop/wider screens.
13. Understands how to create designs that remain visually strong without relying on excessive imagery, animation or heavy visual effects.
Components & States
14. Designs components and their states, rather than simply producing a collection of finished screens.
Components should account for:
Empty states
Error states
Loading states
Long text
Missing images
Different content lengths
15. Able to design the following known states and functionality:
Four service availability states
Notice modal
Vacancy/job feed
Search with no results
404 page
Breadcrumbs
Optional side column used across multiple page types
16. Supplies six service category icons and a small interface icon set as SVG files.
Handover & Production
17. Provides usable, production-ready assets, including:
SVG logo lockups
Exportable icons
Clearly named layers
Documented spacing system
Documented typography/type scales
18. Chooses typefaces licensed for web use and provides details of the applicable licence.
19. Able to create a Figma file that developers can confidently use as the source of truth during implementation.
20. Available for the current project schedule:
Design sign-off: 16 October 2026
Build begins: 19 October 2026
Go live: Friday, 5 February 2027
21. Working hours should be reasonably close to Australian time, allowing for same-day communication and collaboration.
Useful but Not Essential
22. Illustration or mapping skills would be an advantage. One section of the website requires an illustrated map showing seven locations across a regional area.
What We Will Provide
You won't be starting from scratch. We will provide:
The design brief, covering the approved palette, logo lockups, photography direction and full list of deliverables.
An interactive wireframe showing the proposed website structure and user experience.
A block/component library showing the required components and their known states.
